particularly if you go anywhere away from the usual tourist routes where there are no atms. aussie post have a great deal with american express. we bought aussie dollar cheques and were able to buy and later cash them in at the issuing PO with no commission.
we took a combination of the money we were prepared to have stolen, TC and a card.
we, too, were told that noone uses/cashes travellers cheques anymore and decided we had nothing to lose if indeed noone still used them.
i can appreciate how much your head is spinning with so much new information. have a super trip.
