if you are staying in one place and it is fairly reputable then taking cash is fine. As a budget traveller ( ie <100,000 RP per day , then the type of accommodation does not lend itself to leaving money in the safe-the safe is often a box with no lock or one I could break with one hand!
for that reason i still take travelers cheques, some cash and a back up card which has a limit on it so if there are any problems they are only up to a certain amount.
Also depens wher you will be.18months ago- no ATMin Candi Dasa nearest one is Alampura- but no problesm with TC, same in Amed,
