Airlines will say 3 hours as a blanket statement; but my experience is that it depends on the size of the plane you are flying on. Think about it! If you are on a 747 with 400 plus others, you will need every bit of 3 hours to get checked in; clear immigration etc. But if you are on a much smaller plane and there are no other bigger planes leaving at the same time, then 2 hours will be fine.
