As for transport it would be most economical for you to hire a car...as daunting as the roads may seem in bali it's actually not that hard to get around...there are only a few main roads and once u know which one goes where u can just about get anywhere...a road map of bali helps too :) cars are generally around 200,000/day but if you rented for a couple of months u could get a much cheaper price - an avanza would probably be best, with 7 seats and very comfortable - if you need a contact for where to hire a car just let me know...in terms of licensing just get an international license (u prob already know all of this but just thought i'd say in case u didn't)

You will need to apply for your visas before entering bali and to do that you will need to apply at the indonesian embassy in canberra (in person or by mail) - check out their website (just do a search in google) for specifics about how to apply. you will want a tourist visa which costs $60 for 60 days...if you're looking to stay longer then that you will need a social budaya which you will need a sponsor for and you are able to extend that after the 60 days up to 6 months (at a cost of course).

as for accomodation i can't help you around the sanur area but hopefully someone else can :) in general, houses are usually rented at a yearly rate, but i'm sure u can find something to suit ur needs..

hope this is helpful..
