"If you notice that any of the Pura here listed are having their Odalan, I wold say, grab your Temple clothing and check it out; you are pretty sure to see the REAL Balinese music, but all the performances will be THEATER, because the performances that most tourists see is not what the Balinese like to see. Now the list;
Pura Dalem Puri, Pliatan-Tebesaya
Pura Desa, Pliatan,
Pura Dalem Ubud
Pura Dalem Puri, Batuan
Pura Desa, Batuan
Pura Desa, Sukawati
Pura Kahen, Bangli
Pura Taman Pule, Mas
Pura Pondok Batu (near Tejakula, Buleleng)
Pura Batur Kintamani (also on full moon)
Also, look out for Odalans centered around Bale Gong Temples. A Bale Gong is a sacred pavilion where insruments and masks are stored (Gong is what the the Balinese call their orchestras). Alternatively, plan your trip for the period between June 15 and July 15 and check out the yearly Arts Festival at the Wredhi Budaya Arts Center in Denpasar. Just spend one evening wandering from one podium to the other and soak up the atmosphere. Keep in mind that NONE of the musicians/dancers/actors are payed for all that work and presentation. And remember it is NOT put on for "Us", if you get my meaning."
