I agree with you - well I think I do. Especially your sentence 'Or is it for personal gratification to take away some of the guilt of having a good time while the less fortunate go without?'
I know there are many foreigners who support children at school and fully support them in this (I fund the schooling of 3 children myself). What I cannot understand is why these people need to go and visit the children either in their homes or at school. Do they need to receive a pat on the back to prove to themselves what good people they are? Or do they need to be thanked by those who are receiving the charity?
Personally, I would never expect to be 'entertained' at a school or home because I choose to donate. I totally trust those to whom I give the money to use it in the way most needed and I don't need to be thanked for it.
Maybe I'm being too cynical. Just the way I see it.
