your spare phone needs to be unlocked (e.g. not locked to only use Telstra, Optus etc), you just buy a Bali sim card and purchase however much credit you want, exactly the same as you would do here to buy a pre-paid number. The person selling you the sim will be able to set the whole thing up for you. There are lots of small quickie marts and shops or booths who do it, very easy to find. Don't forget to keep a copy of the numbers you wish to call. If you are staying 5 weeks then maybe start with 100,000rp credit and see how you go. You can check your credit by just dialling a number and it will display remaining credit on the screen, if you need more you just top it up. It is very easy, but you must have an unlocked phone (nothing to do with international roaming). I personally prefer ProXL, others like Mentari - there are many to choose from and they all are cheap for calls and sms.
