Saronggirl ,I agree with everything you said in your post.
I first travelled to Bali in 1977 ,about the same time as you.
With these last lot of price hikes I think Bali will be a place of the past for most tourists.
A group of people who are friends of mine have just changed their holiday to Thailand because of the price of hotels in Bali.(18 of them)
I travel all over South East Asia in my work and I can tell you that there are a lot cheaper places than what Bali is now.
Bali has been a favourite destination because it was so cheap but there has been a dramatic change in the last six months or so.
The prices hotels are quoting in US$ is ridiculous ,they are getting up to Singapore prices and we all know how expensive it is there.
In Bangkok you can get a good hotel for about $50 a night ,about a three star or better.
We now find that prices they are asking in Bali for Two star and less are the same as Thailand.
Some of these places are dumps.
It will not change me ,I will still go to Bali ,but I feel for the workers who will lose their jobs if this continues.
