the street by the locals for around Rp 5,000 per $Aus, so you are actually short changing the person you are giving it to. You are better off giving them rupiah as a tip.
When you pass through the airport you can be approached by someone selling rolls of coins who offer you "high" price, maybe rp 1,000 over the street rate. Higher if you "bargain well" (they will be smiling).
The thing is, you are buying expensive $aus if you go over the street rate. Try offering less than the street rate for the day and the deal will be off.
