The money changes have never changed coins into rupiah. That is why one invariably meets people asking tourists to change their accummulated coin collection into rupiah. Especially at the airport, but also on the streets and everywhere. My sister and I have experienced the situation where someone will ask one of us for an Australian coin, and then a few minutes later will ask the other one to please exchange it into rupiah.
