i think padang bai is still a really nice place and it's not like the blue lagoon has turned into a candi dasa. but if you are looking for an isolated beach it isn't that anymore. if your kids are young- watch out, the waves can be dangerous at times. the cafes aren't ugly or obtrusve and the beach itself is nice.
i found amed to be more touristy than padang bai,but i'm sure others would disagree. the beaches at amed are black stone, and not pleasant to sit on as they get very hot.
if you are visiting during the dry season i would highly recommend munduk, an hour south of lovina. it's in the hills and there's heaps to do in the area. i wrote about it earlier this month if you want to do a search.
