the agents sell off the rooms but then the hotel sells the rooms themselves????? This was how it was explained to me by the hotel I usually stay in that is quite often overbooked.
Also another problem is when people stay there and like it and decided to stay longer instead of going home or moving to their next hotel. The staff let them stay in the rooms that they are already in.
I saw this last month. A young group of 10 screaming and abusing the front desk staff because their rooms were not ready the night they got there, but then they lengenthened their trip by 2 weeks and stayed at the hotel. When it was pointed out that the hotel was full and that others would not be able to get their rooms if these ones stayed, they said tough. The staff let them stay instead of having another screaming match. But later saw a mother with 3 kids sitting in the heat after a long flight trying to understand why they had no rooms when they had booked......
