Predicting short term currency flucuations is near impossible.
A $1000US will cost you $1,176 AUD at 0.85 exchange rate and $1149 at $0.87 a difference of $27AUD. You have also got to factor in any commission costs on converting AUD to US.
I think you'll find that the markets have factored in a drop in our interest rates and are guessing that the US will lift theirs following this mornings inflation results from the US.
If you are really worried look at converting some of your spending money to US and take the balance in AUD.
