When we got back to our room on the Sunday night and had had our showers I said that I could still hear water running. Upon investigating we saw that it was actually coming from the room upstairs. I had noticed when we arrived that the ceiling above the hand basin was a bit black with mould but now it was visibly wet. When we looked down the wall you could see were the water was trickling down the wall and it was only about an inch away from the light switch! If we had had a phone we would have called reception there and then but decided to leave it until the morning and decided not to use the light switch in case it shorted out on us. On the Monday morning we reported it to reception and we also mentioned it later during the day to the room staff as the 'leak' had become worse and was now running straight down the wall and onto the floor! They said if we liked we could be moved to another room which we said yes that would be good as I was worried that the ceiling might fall on my head while at the sink! We never did get moved though.
Monday night while I was in the shower I could hear voices very clearly coming through two holes in the wall near the sink. When got out and I looked up I could actually see the people walking up the stairs. I said the Doug that it was not good and also that the mozzies could get it as well. We had bought a big carton of water bottles at Macros so Doug tore the ends off the box and bent them and stuck them in the gaps. It worked great and I would recommend everyone to do this if they stay at the hotel. Walking past some other rooms we saw that others had stuffed towels or plastic bags in their gaps!
On Tuesday morning we went down to wake up Dad but he was already up and had been showered but again he did it in the bath shower!!! He couldn't get his shirt on so I helped him and then saw dry towels on the bed from the night before. I asked him how he had got dried and he said with the towel. When I went and had a look he had got dried with his own wet hand towel that he uses as a face cloth!! No wonder the poor thing couldn't get his shirt on he was still dripping wet! The couple in the room next to him were lovely and the man had been over and lent Dad his adaptor plug so Dad could have a shave. They were staying for 3 months lucky things!! After the previous events for breakfast we all decided that we would go over the road to Breeze. What a difference!!! For Rp35,000 each we had the works! Bacon, ham, eggs, sausage, tomatoes, beans, toast, fruit, juice, tea or coffee! The staff thought it a bit odd that we took our own beans! We did not know if they had them so thought it would be safer to take ours. It was well worth to pay even thought our breakfast at the hotel was included.
After filling ourselves it was off to do a spot of shopping. We went to Gang Sorga (the lane that leads to Ketut's shop) and I bought 3 beautiful bags from the second bag shop on the right I think it is called Wijaya. I paid Rp400,000 which was a bit more than last year but they were all a bit bigger. Around the corner to Ketut's and as soon as we got there out came the customary cold bottle of water for us all. She got a stool for my Dad and he sat while we shopped. Doug bought a lovely Ford shirt and a few polo shirts and I picked up a nice frangipani hair comb to wear for the wedding. By now Dad was ready for his afternoon nap. I wrote him a note saying we would pick him up by 2pm. Doug said he felt like having a nap as well so we went back to our room where I did a bit more on Kelik's song books. Finally I had finished one! Just about 2pm my cousin and her husband came over to finalize times for the wedding pick up. We had a quick chat and then back down to my Dad's as it was now 2.15. When we go there he was up and seemed a bit put out. He said to me 'oh you're here finally'. I explained that we were only 15 minutes late to which he replied 'yes but I have to go out'. This scared me a bit as there is no way he would find his way back if he did go out. I asked him what he needed to go for and he said he needed a hair cut. I said where would he have gone for one and he said to the one just around the corner up the road. I asked where he meant and he said that I was being daft I knew where he meant and he said the name of the hairdresser and it was one back in Australia near where he used to live!! Then I saw the note that I had left him had his writing on the back. He had written me a note on the back saying 'Past 2pm gone for haircut love Dad' We all explained to him the dangers of him wandering off on his own and said that we would take him anywhere at all he wanted to go. He still believed that he could find his way around despite the fact that he could not even find his way to his own room from the street!
We arranged with my cousin to catch up with them later and we went off to get Dad's hair cut. As we needed money changed I suggested we take him to Celebes as it is next to the Kodak shop we use. For years we have walked past Celebes and never gone in. It is really lovely inside. We had to wait a few minutes then it was Dad's turn. The hairdresser asked what he would like and Dad just opted for a normal cut, no massage etc. Doug came in and he said that he wouldn't mind having a cut as well. I suggested he also have a pedicure which surprisingly he agreed to. It was nice having a chat to the owner who surprised me by saying he was 38 when he looked like a 20 year old! He must have seen the disbelief on my face so he took out his passport to show me. Dad's hair looked great. When it was Doug's turn the hairdresser asked Doug about having a number 2 to which I very quickly replied no way maybe a number 5! Doug has an exceedingly receding hairline and where he has hair it is all lovely black curls. Well as I clicked away with the camera the hairdresser clicked away with the scissors and soon there were no more curls, they were in a little heap on the floor to be swept out with my Dad's grey locks!! He even shaved off his sideburns level with the top of his ears!! In over 40 years I have never seen this part of Doug's face with no hair on it!!! There was a tan mark right around from ear to ear!! LOL. Dad's cut cost Rp49.000 and Doug's bill for both Rp120.000.
My cousin was staying at the Jayakarta so we decided that it might be just a bit too far for my Dad to walk so we caught a taxi. Dad asked where we were going and so we told him to visit Anne and Fred. He then amazed us both by saying 'oh are they here in Bali as well'? We had only been with them a about an hour before and he had forgotten. The Jayakarta is the biggest hotel that I have ever seen and it seems to go on for miles. We decided straight away to just go to reception to find out where their room was. We were told it was way back the way we had come in. I remembered that Anne had said that they would probably stay around the pool so thought it best if we look there first. Then we were told there are 2 pools. I suggested that Dad and Doug stay in the foyer and I would have a quick wander. It didn't take me long to find them so off we all went through loads of sunbakers and children. Anne was right at the back next to the beach road. It was lovely to see another hotel but it made us realize why we like smaller hotels. At about 5 we said our goodbyes and off we went to catch a taxi back to our hotel to get ready to go to Gede's house to meet his family. Gede is in the Yellow Band and we have been hanging out to meet his wife Komang and their new little baby son who was born in March. Kelik had arranged transport for us with Agus a driver from the hotel. Gede's house/rooms is in Denpasar off a main road down a long winding laneway with not much lighting. We all walked in single file with Dad in the middle with us all calling out if there was a hole or lump on the way. Finally we saw light! Gede was so happy to see us. After all of the introductions were done I asked if it was ok for me to hold the little baby, which to my delight they said yes. Esa was so little with a huge mop of black hair. I had brought over from Australia some little suits and a gorgeous teddy. He was a bit scared of teddy though. After about half an hour we said our goodbyes and made our way back to the van and into Legian for dinner. We had dinner at Breeze & for the four of us including drinks it was Rp344.000. After dinner we went to Legends as they had a live band playing. I guess we are a bit biased as they were no where near as good as Kelik's. In fact we were only in there a little while when someone in the audience asked for Kelik to get up and sing which he did. When we dropped Dad off I added in big letters 'Do Not Leave Room' across the bottom of his note saying what room we were in etc. When we got back to our room Doug and I had a bit of a talk about Dad and decided that this holiday was now about him and that as we were going to be coming back again in 6 months anything that we wanted to do could wait. I felt it was important that we try to do as much as my Dad wanted to do. The last thing we wanted was for him to go off on and get lost! Another great day and night had come to an end and it was off to bed.
More to come... The Wedding.
