en route to Bangkok from Perth and had the same fears when we realised we had to switch terminals so we rushed like crazy and then spent an hour sitting in the transit lounge waiting to board and wishing we had spent half an hour in a cafe or looking at the shops.
Your baggage, as previously mentioned, would go straight through because you are in transit. Singapore airport is very efficient and to change terminals you board the "Sky Train" which runs every few minutes and everything is clearly signed.
If flying Singapore airways their inflight book shows maps of how to get around the airport but if not, don't worry everything is signed really well and airport personell are most helpful.
