Technically a tourist should always have their passport on them when in Indonesia. Obviously we don't carry them with us necessarily when out from the hotel shopping, but if you are free travelling around Indonesia you should have it with you. I have a document wallet that I can put under my clothes (hangs around my neck) which I use when travelling - it keeps the passport and money safe. If I'm staying in a losmen, I keep it with me - don't leave passport or money in the room.
