Or try get cheap flights back direct with Jet*?
I love the fact that it is only 3.5 hours away as well but adding another dimension to your holiday might make it worth while.
We're going in Feb, with AirAsia, Per - KL, staying four days then KL - Bali - stay for 13 days and then return back to Perth with Jet*. All in all cost us approx $580pp but if you wanted food on the way back, $600pp. I've found accom in central KL is a bit more expensive than accom in Bali but still within the budget.
Worth a look into if you have trouble with long flights. Might make it possible for you? Also if you get your dates right, sometimes upgrading with AA to XL or whatever their premium economy is can be very little extra.
