both occupied various parts of Indonesia over the centuries, of course the Dutch being the dominant occupier. Under British rule, Raffles was Governor of Batavia before he established Singapore. At the time, Bali was more a source of slaves than anything else.
But madge is right, the rumour about the order to cover up the women was the Dutch army, not the British army. My bad.
