There is absolutely no issue with leaving a laptop battery in and running the laptop on mains power. Everyone in my organisation (several hundred) do this and it has no impact on battery life or reliability. In fact, it is preferred to run on AC power with the battery in so that in the event of a power failure the laptop will continue to operate.
Dmac - you might do better buying off the internet, if you find out which battery you need and google it.
