the collecting. The processing of recycled materials is quite expensive and requires specialist processing plants. West Australia doesn't even have a facility for recycling glass and aluminum cans are trucked great distances to be processed which, when you think of the diesel required, makes a bit of a mockery of the reasoning behind it all.
I would say that places like Bali, where people sort through rubbish to collect plastic bottles etc for re-use, are probably doing ok in some areas.
