Recycling here in Oz seems to be an earner, especially aluminium cans. Maybe someone in Bali could get something going to not only make money but also make Bali a bit more eco-friendly - it sure isn't now. And those fires - the vile smell of burning plastic in the evenings - erky perky. Take your own cloth bags so you don't have to use tas plastiks when shopping. Take the hard black bit out of our supermarket green bags to make it easier to fold them in your day bag.
And while I am on my bandwagon, maybe more tourists could tell their hotel managers that their sheets & towels need not be changed daily. The washing water (& other effluent) goes straight out into the ocean in front of the beaches. Ever flown into Bali & seen the brown streaks stretching out from the main beaches? Bali does not have a state-of-the-art sewerage treatment plant yet (as far as I am aware). And tell hotels that they should provide aqua bottle refills at a reasonable price to cut down on all those discarded plastic water bottles - it'd be an earner for the hotels, too.
Jimbaran Hills Resort does all the above (apart from recycling). Located in the Bukit, water is scarce. They also have the aircon set at a min of 21C to further save power. A good example. The hotels down in the main tourist drag won't do anything unless tourists ask for changes.
