Would recommend that you travel to Ubud and seek out expats that quite possibly have places for rent at acceptable prices. Word of mouth seems to be the way to go. Your bloke is lucky, I will be doing the same come August. Enjoy your stay in one of natures wonderlands! As for the knives, possibly email a knife manufacturer to see if they have an outlet in Bali, and don't chop your fingers off!
