it does require regular maintainence (on the roof top). We have alang alang grass on our Balinese lanterns that line our outdoor pathways, and the birds love to pick out the grass in nesting season. The wooden shingle tiles are a better option, lasting longer but you do need to replace some at times and over the years it fades and just gives an old wooden look, which is still effective for outdoor huts and gazebos but may bot in my opinion look good on the house. Alang Alang would look great but along with spiders nesting and birds etc, it wouldn't be a good option for a residence.
