I had a lot of trouble last year exchanging US notes that I had "left over" from a trip to Hawaii. Irrespective of the year of issue, make sure that there are no marks or writing on the notes whatsoever - even bank stamps. The newer the note the better, anything issued before 2000 forget it. There are certain serial numbers they will not touch - sorry but I didn't keep the list that I had. One money exchanger did offer to take notes with those serial numbers - but at half the exchange rate ! Interestingly all the notes that were rejected in Indonesia were able to be exchanged in Thailand without problems.
