We have also had trouble in the past with US notes and have had very good info from our hotel on what to ask for when purchasing them.
IMPORTANT
Always get notes printed 2003 or after.
The notes cannot have a CB code.
And make sure they are in good condition with no ink marks or tears and you should get full value for your US dollar.
You can still change some of the older notes at certain outlets but they dont give the full value these outlets are hard to find and hotels wont even accept the notes at all.
Be safe and change any dodgy notes before you go.
