A cheaper propsect might be to fly to Darwin (assuming your friend isn't a Darwinite) & recouperate in hospital there until able to fly alone to the home city.
Call your friend's airline to check on their policy & costs. From memory, the deal is that you can fly only business class, have to pay for several seats for yourself plus the return business class airfare, accommodation at a 5 star hotel, food etc for the accompanying nurse.
A lesson to us all to have travel insurance - if you can't afford to pay for a medivac then you must get insurance.
