and as we are using Frequent Flyers going there we needed to book a one way fare back. We got a return fare to Sydney with Garuda for $431 one way. I checked for Melbourne and for some strange reason it seemed there were cheaper options by booking each fare one way rather than a return. I had a look for ate december and returning around 12 Jan to melbourne and it looks like you would get there and back for under $1,500. Not as good as the Darwin option but given the time of year I didnt think it too bad.
