I know, I know splitting hairs but I just can't help myself!
In English if you are offered something and you smile and say "Thank you" the other person is going to think you want it but in Indonesian if you smile and shake your head and just say "terima kasih" that is a more polite refusal than "tidak etc" or "tidak mau etc".
Anyway, it works.
