When I worked in Thailand, credit card fraud was rampant, so much so that I did not use my credit cards in Thailand.

In those days, a common device used was known as a Lebanese Box. This simple device was fitted over the real ATM card slot. When the victim pushed his/her card into the slot, the Lebanese Box held the card and no amount of effort by the victim would release it.

Criminals would be either standing behind the victim or sitting nearby with a a pair of binoculars. In both cases, they would note the PIN number used by the victim.

After the victim wandered off without his/her card, the criminals would release the card and use it to clean out the victim's account.
