If your bag is securely padlocked &/or has tamper tells it's a lot less likely to be opened in transit.
Stuff goes missing from hotel rooms, too. We always put the things we'd find it a hassle to lose in a padlocked bag before we go out - working on the premise that what can't be seen isn't a temptation.
