A simple shift of perspective and our own very common ceremonies (whether we believe in them or not) can easily be regarded as 'superstitions', and, by definition, False Beliefs, or else something 'cute' and folkloristic. I know very well that bunyip was only expressing curiosity, and in that context is not to be faulted. O.K. now?
