I have been to Bali 11 times and done Thailand 5 times but only went to Phuket once. I would say give Phuket a try as you won't know until you do and what one person likes another might hate. Me personally I have done all of SE Asia and Bali is my favourite but my husband loves Thailand and hates Bali.....Thailand I can take or leave, does not particularly bother me if I never went there again but if I couldn't go to Bali I would be devastated. I have friends who love Phuket and hate Bali so I would say go and find out for yourself you won't know until you do. I would agree with others though in that Phuket is definitely more expensive. The beaches are definitely nicer in Thailand.
