Have been to Bali 9 times, Phuket 3. Here are my thoughts....
Beaches - Phuket
Shopping - Bali
Food - I once thought Phuket, but now I tend to think Bali caters for a broader range and is much cheaper for food.
Things to do - both, but everything is much cheaper in Bali.
Hotels - Phuket (generally)
Flying - only 3 hours to Bali!!! (from Perth)
People - both lovely people.
To be honest, if you haven't tried Phuket, it is certainly well worth the try. You do need more spending money though!
