Hey rickster,
I'm from Newcastle too!
Anyway, besides that, has anyone mentioned Cash Passports to you? Check out http://www.cashpassport.com.au/ . Much better than Travellers Cheques, you just load the card up with cash and you can withdraw the cash from any ATM in Bali with a VISA symbol. The cards have a PIN, so if they get stolen, they can't be used. You get two cards for one account - I usually keep one in the safe and one on me. I've used these cards heaps in Asia (but haven't been to Bali yet), and have had no worries with them at all. The only drawback is that they charge something like $4 each time you withdraw, so withdraw large sums at a time.
