I always take cash with me and keep it in the hotel safe or deposit box at Reception if there isn't a safe in the room. I have also taken travellers cheques, but not for the last 3 trips.
I have found from my experience that taking cash is much easier than taking cheques. With the travellers cheques you will need your passport as Identification to cash them, and yes some will allow a photocopy of your passport if they have initially seen the original.
I always have at least $50AUS in my purse for when I run out of money because of unexpected purchases. I prefer that than running out of money or having to take my passport with me to cash a cheque.
At the end of the day everyone has their own preference.
