Darwin Airport is a fair way from the city (15 mins with no traffic )and transfers/taxis can be quite expensive.
Best to hire a car.

Google wotif dot com you will find May/June is peak season - high $ and difficult to get accom. The rack rate on wotif is about the rate you will pay during this time. Mediteranean All suites is a good choice. Rooms at Travelodge Mirranbeena have just all been renovated. Palms City Resort a good budget option.
