thanks for the advice - it worries me that there seems to be no fixed rule between the airlines' or airport's policy. Last year we bought our duty free at denpasar airport and had no problems (flying Garuda) getting it onboard but peoples' waterbottles were confiscated before the final baggage check.

Guess I just play it safe and buy in Jakarta - my partner had his grog confiscated last year coming back from China while transiting in Melbourne even though it was still in its sealed bag and even though he was going on to sydney on the same plane that he had disembarked on !
