You are quite correct about being misled and let down by people other than Balinese.
Regretfully there are a number of Europeans, including of course, Australians who make a living out of taking advantage of their, and their victims circumstances.
This not an uncommon story.
Even in paradise there are snakes in the grass.
I am sure that the experience will provide a major part in the jigsaw for your next attempt.
