My I suggest a bottle of wine or whisky. We once gave a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black to an Indonesian friend a few years ago. Bought it Duty Free on the way over. He accepted it with lots of pride. Like everything else that's special to the Balinese it was shared amongst the family members and elders as part of a special occasion. It is considered very hard to get and extremely expensive. I too think that a Birthday cake is a great idea. You can order it ahead through your hotel accommodation at a very reasonable price. As for the children...I have always found notebooks and pens to be very well received...especially when my own children (10 & 8) hand them out.
