I have found the same as chickchili. When I go and watch hubby surf, I sit fairly close to the water and have never been hassled. When you sit up close to tree line they then come and speak to you. I have to say that on the occasions I have spoken to the ladies, I have really enjoyed the conversations and you get to learn a lot more about Bali. If you don't want to buy, be really firm, and don't waver one inch. If they sense any weakness in your resolve they won't give up. If you don't waver, you may get to know someone wonderful, without having to buy a single thing. Keep in mind though, they tend to have different items than you find in shops and markets. We bought some great t-shirts for my daughter that I had not seen anywhere else and great quality (not through lack of trying or looking, mind you. Gotta love Bali shopping!)
Good luck, I hope you get to enjoy the beach this time.
