Hi Silverfox
I cannot offer an alternative but I have a rather funny story to go with your experience. In 2005 we took my 80 year old Grandad to Bali for 10 days he lives in Bunbury WA so is used to the quiet laid back pace, well he went for a walk along the beach, and a swim, (we stayed at Legian Beach) and he must have looked like an easy target, well he came back to the hotel, having had 3 massages, a manicure and pedicure and an arm full of things he would never use. My first thought was oh no, but he was OK with it all saying although he knew he had been sucked in (not that thats the right word) but he really believed he had helped out the ladies by paying them so much. And then he loved the fact that they all knew his name so whenever he went along the beach everyone called out and said hi to him.
But at the same time, I fully understand where you're coming from, it would be nice to have a relaxing day on the beach too. I hope you get some answers to the place to go. Enjoy your trip when you go back.
