Was in Penang in August..stayed in town at the Eastern and Oriental, very nice hotel, and very convenient to all the in town things.....great food just outside the door and across the street...place called Opera, quite inexpensive and very good food. As for beach area to stay, I can't comment, never stayed out at Batu Ferrengi....visited the area tho, quite nice.
Overall, you'll love the food in Penang...never had a bad meal in a week.
