Looking back it is not hard to see that AP was a device to get cash into unscrupulous hands for personal gain in other areas. It was not to provide a service to Aussie tourists.
I can't agree with the sentiment I think I see in your last sentence however.
If you (and Garuda management) could see the lines of tourists at the Singapore Air check-in counters for every flight I think it would be obvious that there is a profitable tourist market from Adelaide to Bali (and probably from Brisbane also) and it's a market that would prefer a 5+ hour direct flight instead of a 10+hour one via Singapore.
