Apparently visas have changed/been combined.
A family member recently extended her 60 day tourist visa through an agent in Bali but only a month at a time (can extend up to 6 months)
No letter but as she used an agent perhaps this was sufficient.
There is info on the Sydney consulate website which seems to be more up to date than other states which explains it well.
