If you didn't buy the phone as part of a pre paid package it should be ok. But most phones when you buy as prepaid still are locked to the network until you spend x amount of dollars topping up or have had the phone a certain amount of time. I have an optus prepaid but still had to call optus to unlock the phone, my mother had a Telstra pre paid and had to do the same. The prepaid phones I have had have not unlocked automatically either. Either ring Telstra and ask them or if someone you know has a sim card that belongs to another network (Optus, vodaphone etc), try it in your phone if it works your phone is unlocked.
