Jakarta is a big busy city that doesn't leave many with a good first impression. I think it is somewhere that can be appreciated after a while - but not for a short break.
There are lots of other places to go if you want to try somewhere different as well as Bali. The Gilis are great islands, just off Lombok - only an hour and a half from Bali direct by speed boat. Why not try there for a few nights? Or Lombok itself? It is different to Bali, being a muslim island, but is still beautiful and very relaxed with lots of lovely beaches and lots of culture. Or if you want to go a bit further afield, what about a flight to Flores? Again, there are direct flights from Bali. Flores is an absolutely fascinating island with such lovely people and breathtaking scenery. Everything is very traditional. I loved it there.
If you want to go to Java, Yogyakarta is a cool, relaxed town. I'd say much more enjoyable than Jakarta, especially for a first timer. There are the big temples of Borobodur and Prambanan near too. Again, a direct flight from Bali - only a short hop.
All of these things can be booked once you arrive in Bali. Although the extra leg to Jakarta may sound like a good deal, I wouldn't say it is the best option for a first experience of somewhere else in Indo.
