If you do a search of the BTF you will see posts relating to visiting Petulu, which is about 5km north of Ubud. The herons come in to roost each evening prior to sunset. There are numerous warungs set up to serve you drinks whilst you watch the flock arrive. The Kokokan warung we chose had zero stars, 'for the best viw of the bird'.
We went for a drive up there last March but unfortunately not many herons chose to have their sleep over in Petulu that night. Maybe a few hundred.
I have spoken to a few others who have been up there at sunset and they also picked the wrong night as not many herons arrived.....
I laughed when I was reading Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Liz rode up to Petulu to watch the herons and unfortunately too picked the wrong night as not many birds flew in to roost overnight.
Begs the question, do the herons ever flock to Petulu these days?
Has anyone visited Petulu over the past couple of years and seen the ten of thousands of herons arrive?
