Plastic bags cause so much damage in Bali. Not only the local drain-clogging they cause but also the vile acrid fires in the evening when they are being burned with other rubbish not to mention the damage to marine life when they're washed out to sea.

I think Balinese store holders & shop keepers should have carry bags (like the IGA or Bunnings ones)to sell to tourists who don't have them at a nominal price when they buy something. Maybe 5K rupiah should cover it & the tourists keep & carry them with them. Don't have to be the supermarket-type ones we have here in Oz with the hard plastic removable base - just plain but sturdy cotton bags would suffice. I still have & use bags I got from clothes shops in Ubud 3 years ago. They fold up into a tiny ball & are quite strong.

And while I am on my soap box - I wish more hotels would do refills for plastic water bottles -there's a good profit to be made without the problems of the plastic disposal. And there is no need for sheets & towels to be changed & washed daily - the washing water with detergent goes into the ocean to the detriment of marine life. Every 2 or 3 days is fine by us.
