Dennis's idea of using a special credit card with $500 limit is worth note, else yes, could use debit card and only deposit enough funds to cover the purchase as credit limit is restricted eg $50
I use my Westpac Mastercard debit card in Bali and if I want to withdraw cash from the ATM I select credit.
