The tax you have to pay varies as to what you purchase. Handicrafts are 5% and clothing is 17.5%. Everything else is in between this range. You also need to add 10% GST to every purchase above the import tax.
So the maximum tax on anything is clothing at 27.5%.
You need to check with your friend just what there price includes. All containers must be fumigated so this should be included.
I would suggest bringing as much clothing back with you and sending Handicrafts, paintings, statues and books in the container.
Definately do not send lollies or any other food stuff.
